What Are My I PsAlso known as an "IP number" or simply an "IP," this is a code made up of numbers separated by three dots that identifies a particular computer on the Internet. Every computer, whether it be a Web server or the computer you're using right now, requires an IP address to connect to the Internet. IP addresses consist of four sets of numbers from 0 to 255, separated by three dots. For example "4.2.2.1" or "263.246.225.1". If you use more than one computer at your home or business, then odds are you have an outside IP address and also an inside IP address. Only your outside IP is recognized by the World Wide Web (WWW) and is usually set in your router which is the device that all computers connect to. To learn what your IP address is, [[http://whatsmyip.org | click here]. More:An inside IP is always a public IP address that is only used in internal networks. These addresses look like 192.168.1.1, 172.16.0.1, or 10.10.10.1 and are never used on the WWW. So if you had 3 computers connected to a Linksys router for example, your computers might have three addresses of 192.168.1.100, 192.168.1.101, and 192.168.1.103. These addresses are only good for the network of the computers and your router (192.168.1.1). |
